Cracking the whip

It was interesting to read in DNA of Sept.17 that the police have started cracking the whip on vehicle owners flouting licence plate norms. The deputy commissioner of police is reported to have said, “Many vehicles do not adhere to the prescribed norms.” What an understatement! Pray, what were the police doing all these years? The sense of timing and the people targeted seems to suggest that they are on a money collection spree just before the elections to help the politicians. If the police have any courage, integrity or sense of duty let them book the offenders in high places like those belonging to the powerful political class and the community of the rich and famous. Most of the violators are government owned vehicles and those with special numbers bought at a price. The police could even start by looking at their own vehicles and take punitive action.
