What's the difference

In the Times of India of Sept.17 the commerce minister Mr. Anand Sharma is reported to have pointed out that "with USD 75 as daily allowance, a minister often had to step out of his hotel to look for a cheap joint for a meal. In future, a minister will have to be either corrupt or a rich man".
Wonder whether there is any difference between being corrupt and being rich. I thought being one implied the other!

Cracking the whip

It was interesting to read in DNA of Sept.17 that the police have started cracking the whip on vehicle owners flouting licence plate norms. The deputy commissioner of police is reported to have said, “Many vehicles do not adhere to the prescribed norms.” What an understatement! Pray, what were the police doing all these years? The sense of timing and the people targeted seems to suggest that they are on a money collection spree just before the elections to help the politicians. If the police have any courage, integrity or sense of duty let them book the offenders in high places like those belonging to the powerful political class and the community of the rich and famous. Most of the violators are government owned vehicles and those with special numbers bought at a price. The police could even start by looking at their own vehicles and take punitive action.

Judicial licence

In DNA of Sept.17 in the coverage on the Sujal Chugh case, Bunty Chugh is reported to have said to the court, “I made a mistake.” The judges, Bilal Nazki and AR Joshi responded by saying, “You will soon realize how big a mistake it is.” Such an observation, I feel, was neither warranted nor befitting the dignity of a judge. It seems to smack of vindictiveness.
